The pressure tank is the quietest part of a well system and the one most often overlooked. Its job is to hold a cushion of pressurized air so your pump does not have to start every time someone opens a tap. When that cushion is lost — a failed bladder, a waterlogged tank, or corrosion in an old galvanized tank — the pump starts cycling on and off constantly.
That rapid cycling is not just annoying. Every start puts wear on the pump motor, and a failing tank is one of the most common reasons a pump dies years before it should. Replacing a tank is far cheaper than replacing a pump.
Symptoms of a failing tank
- The pump switches on and off rapidly while water is running
- Water pressure surges and drops at the tap
- The tank feels heavy or full when tapped (waterlogged)
- Visible rust, weeping, or leaks around the tank or fittings
- An old galvanized tank that has never been serviced
Tank types we replace
We replace bladder and diaphragm pressure tanks, plain pressure tanks, bulk storage tanks, and the older galvanized tanks still in service on a lot of Central Florida properties. Sizing matters here too — a tank too small for the system will not stop the short-cycling you called about.
We also check the pressure switch and set the cut-in and cut-out pressures correctly, because a new tank paired with a worn or mis-set switch will not deliver steady pressure.
Common questions
How do I know if it is the tank or the pump?
Rapid on-off cycling and pressure that surges and drops usually point at the tank. It is worth confirming, because the two problems look similar at the tap but cost very different amounts to fix.
Will replacing the tank fix my low pressure?
Often, when the tank is the cause. If the switch, the pump, or a restriction in the lines is behind it, a tank alone will not solve it — which is why we diagnose before recommending.
Can this be done same day?
